In my essay “A Mass Arrest, A Test of Freedom: Is This the End of Globalization?”, which received an International Honor Award in the Cambridge University Re:Think Essay Competition, I examined the promises of globalization through the lenses of democracy, freedom and development. Taking the mass detentions in Turkey as a point of departure, I used Amartya Sen’s approach to development and freedom to question whether economic integration alone can be considered democratic progress. The essay also explores the effects of globalization on income inequality, political representation, the rule of law and public participation. Rather than asking only whether globalization is coming to an end, the article focuses on whether it can be rebuilt around justice, pluralism and freedom.
